Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a potential scavenger to radicals and oxidants. The exposure to these species is termed as "oxidative stress". Oxidative stress is believed to contribute to the development of various chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and cataract. An inadequate vitamin C status usually is observed in case of malnutrition, smoking, alcohol abuse, chronic intoxications, and stress. Also, nursing women and elderly people are in danger of a low vitamin C status.
